TPG at the Compact Housing Seminar
Andrew Howe and Oliver Penman flew to Sydney recently to attend ‘the Compact Housing Seminar’ jointly hosted by PIA and the ACNU. The day involved presentations from practitioners around Australia on their local challenges and successes in delivering compact and affordable housing in middle and outer ring locations, a site tour and a density workshop / discussion.
The day was framed around Urban Growth NSW (previously Landcom's) flagship density project ‘Thornton’, which is located next to the train station at Penrith on former army land. Oliver was previously involved in the detailed master plan for the project, and the trip provided a great opportunity to interrogate the details of a project hitting the ground. To their credit, Urban Growth has chosen to create their first stage and display village on the more challenging, compact, rear-loaded lots with a curved frontage around a heritage oval. There were a number of interesting typologies to walk through and discuss, along with some good findings and precedents to apply to our current and future work.
